Notes on Oscillations
Euler's Equation - a beautiful equation !

Forced Harmonic Oscillator - a write up and data - also check out this lab description and results using a driven harmonic oscillator apparatus.

Coupled Oscillators

Suppose we have two pendula that are coupled by a spring. What is the resulting motion of this system? - Read this note: cosc.pdf

Play with these Interactive Physics demos of coupled oscillators. Click on the masses or spring and use the Properties window to change starting conditions or the spring constant.

  1. coup_sym.ip.hqx - shows the coupled oscillators in the symmetric mode -- they start at rest and both are displaced from equilibrium by the same amount in the same direction.
  2. coup_asym.ip.hqx - shows the oscillators in the asymmetric mode -- they start at rest and both are displaced from equilibrium by the same amount in opposite directions.
  3. coup_mixed.ip.hqx - shows the oscillators in the mixed mode -- they start at rest and only one of the two is initially displaced.
