This is the Honors Section of P221, the calculus-based introductory physics course, intended primarily for (but not limited to) Freshmen who are interested in the sciences. This is a fairly intense course which also stresses collaborative learning. The topics covered here are similar to those in the normal P221 course with a number of the topics covered in greater depth.

Enroll in these Sections - This is a 5 credit hour course. You should register for the following sections:

  • 3870 - 1:25p - 2:15p - M WF - SW238 (lecture)
  • 3871 - 9:05a - 9:55a - T and 8:00a - 8:50 a R - SW103 (discussion)
  • 3872 - (lab) - see note below

Please note that there will be no distinction between lecture and discussion meetings. You should register for section 3872 [lab] but you will NOT attend that lab. Labs and research projects in the honors section will be carried out in SW135 outside of class hours. You will have access to SW135 - each student will be given a key to the room.

Classroom Participation - Class participation is essential in this course. You will be expected to make frequent presentations including: problem solutions and brief talks. I also encourage students to work together in groups on problem solutions (which will be due almost daily) and lab projects. You are expected to attend all classes.

Software - We make use of software in this course for communication. The Mac G4 computers (with flatpanel displays) in SW135 have software for preparing reports, websites, collecting data and analyzing data. Please make yourself familiar with these packages. Your AI's and I will help with you getting started.

Meeting Room - A room in Swain Hall is dedicated for this course: SW135. Students in this class will be issued keys to this room so that you will have access to the computers and equipment outside of regular class hours.
