Kattaryna Balmas

Much of the information here was obtained from the Ellis Island Foundation web site and doing a Passenger Search. You can order copies of relevant pages of the ship manifest (made from microfilm records) from this site.

Katarryna (Catherine) Balmas, our maternal grandmother, arrived in New York city on July 23 1912 on the S.S. Zeeland which sailed from the port of Antwerp, Blegium on July 13, 1912. You can see the microfilm scans (first and second pages - go to line #11 on both pages) of the relevant pages of the ship's logbook that list Katarryna's name and information. More below.

From this we see that Katarryna was 17 years old when she arrived in the US and single. Her place of residence is listed as Doromire, Russia. Now Doromire is listed as a village in Poland.

Her nationality is listed as Russian and her race as Polish. Her occupation was listed as 'housework.' Her father's name was Antonin.

She is listed as being 5'2". blond hair and blue eyes and was to go to a cousin, Katarryna Kaminska in Niagara Falls, NY.
